Compared to other recent nose-forward designs, the jetta's composite headlights and various inlets and grilles are well integrated into the raked rearward flow of its form. A striking vee, created by the slant of the headlamps and sloping hood lines, is carried strongly toward the rear by the steeply raked windshield and character lines running along the flanks. the tail is a major departure from previous jetta styling. Larger tail light clusters, now divided between the trunk and rear fender, help widen the proportion of the car's hindquarters in relation to its height, giving it a more substantial, less boxy-looking stern. The round tail lights and brake lights have been singled out as the new jetta's most derivative design statement. Tail lamps wrap well into the rear side panels but no lights are in the hatch so rear visibility is not compromised loading in the dark. interiorvolkswagen and audi interiors are often the benchmark for other manufacturers because their designers accomplish more with less, combining expensive-looking materials with simple, attractive styling and excellent ergonomics. The seats are easy to adjust with manual controls, and the adjustable steering column and height-adjustable safety belt help drivers of all sizes get comfortable. The thick-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel frames a gauge cluster dominated by separate, large dials for the tachometer and speedometer, well shaded from ambient light by a curved cowl. In daylight the graphics read white on black, at night changing to white on soothing swimming-pool blue with lighted red pointers. In either case, the data are easy to comprehend at a glance. Within the tachometer and speedometer are warning lights and advisories about secondary functions, including one thoughtful warning that the fuel filler door was left opened after refueling. A large electronic message pad sits dead center, just over the water temperature and fuel gauges. In addition to more warning and diagnostic symbols, on upper-trim models this display includes trip computer readouts. trip computer data are accessed by one of three levers mounted on the steering column (or with the available multi-function steering wheel buttons). Fenders and bumpers are made from a special dent-resistant plastic. New turn indicators on outside mirrors warn drivers alongside when changing lanes. Color-keyed mirror housings and door handles add to the beetle's clean appearance. Smoothed-out wheel wells and revised bumpers give it a seamless, aerodynamic appearance. Double exhaust pipes hint of compressed aspiration under the hood, while special 17-inch alloy wheels and tires indicate a sports suspension. A subtle turbo s badge, styled after porsche badging, adorns the back hatch on which sits a rear valance. The turbo's rear spoiler pops up at speed and is designed to maintain rear-end stability in high-speed corners. After spending some time with the car, we found the rear spoiler a bit annoying as it comes back down with a 'thunk' when slowing down. color is important on the beetle and a diverse palette is available, including special-edition colors introduced at different times during the 2003 model year: campanella white, galactic blue, sunflower yellow, sundown orange, cyber green, chromaflair silver/green, blue lagoon, red uni, chromaflair cyan/purple, black, reflex silver, red, blue lagoon, and platinum gray. . interiorvolkswagen beetle sweeping roofline creates tremendous front-seat headroom, though less than the pt cruiser and slightly less than the mini cooper. Beefy front a-pillars (the post between the windshield and side window) impede vision in tight corners. (this big dash area and thick a-pillars are no doubt part of the beetle's excellent crumple-zone design.) small sun visors have no hope of blocking the sun coming in through the giant side windows. We found a six-foot passenger could sit comfortably by a six-and-half-foot driver. leather upholstery and wood trim make the lux model feel like a far more expensive german car, minus tens of thousands of dollars on the bottom line. Each of the other models, 2. 0t, komfort, and vr6, features its own unique metallic trim instead of wood. the interior ambience is best defined as understated luxury. Despite the cockpit's many creature comforts and electronic controls, there's a simplicity about the design and functionality that helps drivers fulfill their assigned task without confusion or calamity. Ambient lighting helps with interior illumination at night. An umbrella holder in the driver's door, complete with a drainage system so a wet umbrella can be stowed without harm, makes us feel like we're in a rolls-royce. the dashboard design is broken into upper and lower layers, avoiding the monolithic, crowded look of many contemporary control centers. The upper panel houses the air outlets and a deep cowl shading the gauges; the lower handles various accessory functions, including the button for the electronic parking brake, a rotary control for the headlamps and, to the right of the steering wheel, the engine start/stop slot. instead of fitting a key into a column-mounted ignition switch, the entire key fob is pushed into a dash-mounted slot. To stop the car and eject the fob, simply push it again. What might seem a gimmick is in reality a boon to safety and reliability: a dangling keychain can prematurely wear an expensive ignition switch or cause leg injury during a crash. However, we found vw's space-age ignition switch hung up sometimes when we tried to exit the car in a hurry, and was hard to pull out, which was annoying. the center console flows rearward from the dash, housing the navigation screen, climate controls and shift lever. Flanking the shifter are buttons for esp deactivation, an auto hold function to keep the car from rolling backward on hills, and optional park distance control. Two large cupholders fit between the seats just forward of the folding armrest. The furry material around the cupholders looks like it could be a haven for crumbs, not good for people who eat in their car. Storage is available in a number of bins, including a sunglasses holder. the passat wagon can carry a large amount of cargo, even without folding the back seats down. Fold the back seats down simply by flopping the seatbacks forward.
