2012 chevrolet sonic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New subcompact is sporty yet sensible. introductionthe chevy aveo is dead. But don't shed any tears. The subcompact perhaps best known by frequenters of rental-car lots has been supplanted by the sharper, nimbler chevrolet sonic sedan and hatchback. Built on a new general motors global platform, the new sonic wields universal underpinnings wrapped in a package that's decidedly american. We found the sonic a nicely designed subcompact with spritely driving dynamics.  the 2012 chevrolet sonic, particularly the five-door hatch, has an urban vibe, which chevy pr folks were eager to point out by unveiling the sonic in an underground garage in san francisco amidst a background of pseudo-slummy graffiti, spray-painted by an artist flown in (we won't say 'imported') from detroit. Sharp creases, exposed headlamps and motorcycle-inspired design cues set the sonic apart from others in the segment, while good fit and finish and standard forged alloy wheels, even on the base model, keep it from looking cheap.  powering the 2012 chevrolet sonic sedan and hatch is either a 1. 8-liter naturally aspirated engine or a 1. 4-liter turbocharged engine, both which make 138 horsepower. Transmission choices for the standard 1. 8-liter engine are a 6-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual; the 1. 4-liter turbo is available with a 6-speed manual or an automatic, the latter on late-production 2012 models.  those who drive hilly terrain need not fear, as sonic comes standard with a hill-hold feature on both transmissions (especially welcome on the manual gearbox). When the driver is stopped and releases the brake pedal, the brakes electronically hold the car in place for two seconds, thanks to a sensor that detects the tilt of the body when the car is stopped on a slope.  the 2012 chevrolet sonic comes standard with 10 airbags, including seat-mounted thorax side-impact, head curtain and knee airbags. Select features that come standard on the ltx are available on lower trim levels.  safety features on all models include antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake force distribution (ebd) and panic brake assist; electronic stability control and traction control, hill-hold feature, and 10 airbags: front driver and passenger, seat mounted thorax side-impact, head curtain, rear side-impact and knee airbags. walkaroundalthough it's made in america, the 2012 chevrolet sonic was sketched and modeled in korea by designers who are avid motorcycle enthusiasts. Alloy wheels, available in 15, 16 or 17-inch, look far more sophisticated than the plastic wheel covers or steel wheels found on some cars in this segment.  large gaps between body panels were one tell-tale sign of cheap cars of the past. But the chevrolet sonic manages to pare down body gaps to 3. 5 millimeters or less. Also, a special welding technique was used to make for a cleaner, more flush fit. interiorthe cabin of the chevrolet sonic carries over the motorcycle-inspired design with a large, round tachometer front and center. The tall, narrow slots on either side of the center stack add extra storage, but they look out of place.  the cloth seats are comfortable and are easily adjustable. We especially like the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, which is often tough to get as standard equipment on more luxurious cars. Dash and trim materials (mostly plastics) are attractive and the colors and textures are well-executed.  in the rear, there is enough headroom and legroom, even for taller passengers.  cargo space tops out at an average 14 cubic-feet for the sedan and a decent 19 cubic feet for the hatchback. A shelf in the rear of the hatch stows away for tall items and is completely removable for more space when the 60/40 folding rear seats are down, for a total of 30. 7 cubic feet.  the audio system is average for the segment. We'd order the ipod and usb port, which allows music streaming via bluetooth with pandora or music files stored locally on a mobile phone. driving impressionthe chevrolet sonic delivers spritely acceleration performance with the standard 1. 8-liter engine. Power from the 1. 8-liter engine is sufficient off the line, but we found throttle tip-in to be overly sensitive and that made for jumpy standing starts until we got used to it.  we sometimes had trouble choosing the right gear over hills and through windy roads. With the automatic, we needed to manually shift to get the optimum power. With the manual, we felt like a driving goldilocks: second gear was too short, yet third was much too tall. This suggests torque from the 1. 8-liter engine might not be sufficiently broad and robust for the gear ratios. In layman's terms, more power would be useful for motoring around town.  we found the 1. 4-liter turbo models a tad zippier.  steering was surprisingly responsive. The suspension was compliant enough to handle bumps and railroad tracks, yet still firm enough to let us round corners with minimal body roll.  braking is responsive; the pedal bites down quickly enough for those who like instant feedback, but is perhaps a little too bitey for those who like a more progressive pedal feel.  fuel economy for the chevrolet sonic regardless of body style is an epa estimated 26/35 mpg city/highway with the 1. 8-liter engine and 5-speed manual transmission, 25/35 mpg with the automatic. The big news for 2005 is the introduction of the accord hybrid, which achieves excellent fuel economy and generates almost no emissions. Even more impressive, the hybrid delivers improved performance as well, thanks to its hybrid gas-electric powertrain. The popular lx and ex models are terrific cars with comfort and convenience features that make for great daily drivers. Order the leather interior, and the ex becomes an affordable luxury sedan. The accord is also available with a powerful v6 engine, which adds another level of sports appeal.  a gorgeous coupe is available, featuring sporty styling that's unique from the sedan. The sharpened noses of the accord sedan and coupe are reminiscent of an acura rsx. The corners and sides of both bodies are carefully sculpted with a combination of concave and convex surfaces, in an attempt to achieve a muscular and agile look, with subtle and unique three-dimensional window glass, also intended to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamically efficient side-view mirrors are one of the results of wind tunnel testing. The sedan's drag coefficient (a measure of how easily it moves through the air) is 0. 30, which is quite slippery. The accord hybrid sedan is even more aerodynamic, with a 0. 29 cd, thanks to its rear spoiler and angled antenna.  the accord sedan and coupe share no sheet metal, although their faces do look alike partly because they both have angular headlamps. The coupe is a completely different beast from the sedan, however. Its flanks and rear deck are more shapely, flowing naturally and gracefully from the roofline. It yields a very aerodynamic 0. 29 drag coefficient.  the accord's doors are built using a unique method that makes them light and strong. Additionally, the coupe earned a five-star rating for front- and rear-seat passengers in the side-impact test, even without the optional side-impact airbags.  all accord coupes and the majority of sedans are assembled in honda's marysville, ohio, plant, though some of the sedans come from japan and mexico. interiorthe honda accord's interior is smooth, firm, and quiet. For starters, it comes with great seats.  the seats in the sedan are generously wide and tall, with springs and urethane padding designed to reduce vibration. The driver's seat provides a one-with-the-car feel with good side support. It features a manual height adjustment or power adjustments on premium models. Front legroom is generous. A tilt-and-telescope steering wheel comes standard.  the seats in the coupe seem a bit different and feel even better than those in the sedan. The side bolsters are more aggressive providing a more secure fit at the torso. The cloth looked classier in black; the light-colored cloth looked like it would show dirt over time. The leather is nicer than the cloth.  the sedan's bench seat is roomy and comfortable, especially for two people with the center armrest flipped out. The accord's trunk measures 14 cubic feet (though only 11. 2 for the hybrid version because of its extra computer and battery pack), compared with the camry's nearly 17 cubic feet and the altima's 15. 6. The coupe's trunk is slightly smaller than the sedan's, holding less than 13 cubic feet.  the instrumentation is excellent, comprising large, clear analog faces with led illumination, the latter a feature associated with higher-priced luxury cars. A big speedometer in the center dominates the instrument panel. The switchgear, primarily three big dials located in the center of the dash, is simple, if not particularly attractive. And automatic dual-zone climate control is available on ex models.  honda's interior fit and finish is good. The available bird's-eye wood grain plastic trim looked interesting, the faux carbon fiber trim looked nice, and the brushed aluminum trim wasn't bad either.  interior space is used efficiently, with the audio, climate and optional navigation system controls integrated into a single unit. This frees up space for exceptional cabin storage, including a good-sized glovebox, a big center console, a bin under the audio system that will hold 12 cds, and door pockets deep and wide enough for a purse.  attention to detail shows in every corner: coinholders, cellphone cord hooks, grab handles over every door, console lights, power outlets, sunglasses holders, sliding armrests for different-sized arms, convenient and versatile access to the trunk from the rear seat. Up to eight cupholders are provided; a couple of them are big enough to hold a liter-sized water bottle yet feature spring-loaded prongs that can grip a paper coffee cup. It boasts generous standard content and a beguiling mix of high-tech and haute couture. The passat wagon followed for 2007. For 2008, there are no mechanical changes and no styling changes, aside from new wheels and colors. There have been revisions to the lineup for 2008, however: base models are better equipped for 2008, base wagons can be ordered with manual transmission. For 2008, all v6 wagons come with all-wheel drive. Upmarket models and vr6s come with the automatic only. It is a stunning example of volkswagen's goal of melding the aesthetic and the technical. It has a dynamic stance, and just enough extraneous shapes and creases to make it interesting from various angles. The wheels and tires, especially the vr6 model's 18-inch wheels, fit well within the wheelwells and underscore the passat's look of a well-grounded automobile. We found a six-foot passenger could sit comfortably by a six-and-half-foot driver.  leather upholstery and wood trim make the lux model feel like a far more expensive german car, minus tens of thousands of dollars on the bottom line. Each of the other models, 2. 0t, komfort, and vr6, features its own unique metallic trim instead of wood.  the interior ambience is best defined as understated luxury. Despite the cockpit's many creature comforts and electronic controls, there's a simplicity about the design and functionality that helps drivers fulfill their assigned task without confusion or calamity. Ambient lighting helps with interior illumination at night. An umbrella holder in the driver's door, complete with a drainage system so a wet umbrella can be stowed without harm, makes us feel like we're in a rolls-royce.  the dashboard design is broken into upper and lower layers, avoiding the monolithic, crowded look of many contemporary control centers. The upper panel houses the air outlets and a deep cowl shading the gauges; the lower handles various accessory functions, including the button for the electronic parking brake, a rotary control for the headlamps and, to the right of the steering wheel, the engine start/stop slot.  instead of fitting a key into a column-mounted ignition switch, the entire key fob is pushed into a dash-mounted slot. To stop the car and eject the fob, simply push it again. What might seem a gimmick is in reality a boon to safety and reliability: a dangling keychain can prematurely wear an expensive ignition switch or cause leg injury during a crash. However, we found vw's space-age ignition switch hung up sometimes when we tried to exit the car in a hurry, and was hard to pull out, which was annoying.  the center console flows rearward from the dash, housing the navigation screen, climate controls and shift lever. Flanking the shifter are buttons for esp deactivation, an auto hold function to keep the car from rolling backward on hills, and optional park distance control. Two large cupholders fit between the seats just forward of the folding armrest. The furry material around the cupholders looks like it could be a haven for crumbs, not good for people who eat in their car. Storage is available in a number of bins, including a sunglasses holder.  the passat wagon can carry a large amount of cargo, even without folding the back seats down. Fold the back seats down simply by flopping the seatbacks forward. Volkswagen and audi seem to have solved some of the drivability issues we've expressed in the past about the compatibility of the 2. 0-liter turbo with the automatic transmission. 2006 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth and responsive. introductionthe honda odyssey has been a bestseller ever since the second generation was introduced in 1999. When the all-new third generation was introduced as a 2005 model, honda showed it wasn't resting on its laurels. Power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats come standard.  the ex 28,395) adds power sliding doors, tri-zone climate control, a stowable second-row plusone seat, in-dash cd changer, steering wheel audio controls, power driver seat controls, alloy wheels and other features. It has a slightly stiffer suspension, run-flat tires, front and rear parking sensors, automatic tri-zone climate control, a power tailgate, power-adjustable pedals, an upgraded sound system, 17 cupholders, and all the features found in the ex with leather. That's stretching it a bit, though it looks curvy in profile and there is a similarity to the accord in the front end.  large headlights flank its big grille. The hood is sculptured with curves that lead naturally back to the windshield and emphasize the big fender flares. Honda has not hidden the sliding door channels at the base of the window but left them partially obscured by a crease that runs the length of the vehicle.  all models come with two sliding doors, manually operated on the lx and electrically operated on all other models. The power windows in each of the side doors can be opened in the same fashion as in a car. The power doors seemed a bit reluctant to operate at times, less responsive to key fob commands than toyota's sliding doors.  the odyssey boasts honda's advanced compatibility engineering (ace) body structure. The vehicle's crush zones have been re-engineered to provide better protection for occupants while lessening damage when hitting other smaller vehicles and pedestrians. Its body structure is rigid, a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. A low drag coefficient helps improve fuel economy and high-speed stability. interiorinside, the honda odyssey is comfortable and convenient. It feels downright luxurious when ordered with leather trim. The materials are nice and the metallic-colored trim that runs across the center dash is attractive.  the driver's seat is designed to hold the driver more firmly and is positioned in a car-like setting. The shift lever is mounted on the dashboard; it looks odd at first, but it's easier to use than a column-mounted shifter. A handy drink tray is provided between the front seats, but there's no center console.  the second-row bucket seats are comfortable.  the third-row seat is split 60/40 and folds easily into the well provided for it, and the headrests do not need to be removed before folding.  there's room for eight people with the optional plusone seat that fits between the two captain's chairs in the second row. If it's not needed as a seat it can be turned into a table or stowed in the floor in place of the lazy susan bin. If the plusone seat is not being used, the right-hand seat can be slid across to allow easier access to the third-row seats. This flexibility makes the odyssey a versatile people hauler, but it's not the best in the class for hauling cargo.  the optional voice-activated dvd navigation system includes zagat restaurant data. The large eight-inch monitor is positioned high on the dashboard for easy viewing. The voice-activated system responds to 637 commands and is smart enough to understand different accents and find locations without any need for input other than by voice. Apart from navigation, the system can be used to operate the radio and climate controls. We found the system responds effectively to voice commands.  the available dvd entertainment system features a large nine-inch widescreen display that folds out of the ceiling. The wireless headsets turn on and off automatically as the ear pads are rotated. No, it's not for serving food, but for adding an incredibly useful hidden storage area. The previous odyssey had a storage well under the floor of the front seats for the spare tire. Honda engineers have moved the spare to a location in the rear. Instead of removing the round space under the floor where the spare used to reside they've turned it into a hidden storage compartment with a rotating compartmentalized bin. There's a small access panel in the floor between the two front seats for front passengers to get access and another bigger one in front of the center-row seats for access. So whatever stuff is stowed in the lazy susan, front or middle-row passengers can turn it for access. Honda's goal with this latest-generation model was to produce a minivan with the handling of a european sedan.  the odyssey belies its size on the road and handles like a premium sedan. We found its handling and ride pleasant for long drives as well as around town.  during a test drive along country roads near the honda factory in alabama, we found the odyssey offered a perfectly pleasant ride. It was neither too firm nor too soft. Granted, there is some road vibration. It was no worse than in a chrysler town & country, however, and many people will not notice as it's a common trait of many large cars and most suvs. All in all, it's an ideal vehicle for a long-distance drive.  several laps around a race track showed the odyssey to be stable at high speeds. And we were surprised how much we could chuck it into corners. We found we could drive hard enough into a sharp corner to feel the tires slip without any drama. We could not feel much body roll (lean) in corners, and an odyssey lapping in front of us looked remarkably stable for a tall vehicle.  parking is easy. The turning radius is among the tightest of any minivan, making it an easy to make u-turns and maneuver in parking lots. The park-assist system, with beeping tones that warn the driver of other bumpers front and rear, helps considerably when parallel parking.  straight-line acceleration is good, better than other minivans. Yet despite having 244 horsepower going through the front wheels, the odyssey is almost devoid of any torque steer.  the odyssey's 3. 5-liter v6 engine is smooth, powerful, clean and fuel efficient. Both versions of the v6 generate the same amount of power: 244 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque (though the ivtec generates its peak torque at 4500 rpm vs. 5000 rpm for the vtec). If it looks like horsepower figures are lower for 2006, it's due to a change in how the society of automotive engineers tests engines. No change has actually been made to the engines.  the brakes work well. Every odyssey comes with anti-lock brakes (abs) and vehicle stability assist, honda's electronic stability control system. This system works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire accelerator and abs to modulate the brakes while managing the throttle and ignition. If the vehicle starts to lose grip on a tight turn on a slippery surface, the system automatically slows the engine and gently applies brakes to stop the vehicle from skidding out of control. In a test on a soaking skid pad we found the system works well. Fortunately it only works in emergency situations so it's not distracting during normal spirited driving. It can be turned off, though we recom.
