2006 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth and responsive. introductionthe honda odyssey has been a bestseller ever since the second generation was introduced in 1999. When the all-new third generation was introduced as a 2005 model, honda showed it wasn't resting on its laurels. Power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats come standard. the ex 28,395) adds power sliding doors, tri-zone climate control, a stowable second-row plusone seat, in-dash cd changer, steering wheel audio controls, power driver seat controls, alloy wheels and other features. It has a slightly stiffer suspension, run-flat tires, front and rear parking sensors, automatic tri-zone climate control, a power tailgate, power-adjustable pedals, an upgraded sound system, 17 cupholders, and all the features found in the ex with leather. That's stretching it a bit, though it looks curvy in profile and there is a similarity to the accord in the front end. large headlights flank its big grille. The hood is sculptured with curves that lead naturally back to the windshield and emphasize the big fender flares. Honda has not hidden the sliding door channels at the base of the window but left them partially obscured by a crease that runs the length of the vehicle. all models come with two sliding doors, manually operated on the lx and electrically operated on all other models. The power windows in each of the side doors can be opened in the same fashion as in a car. The power doors seemed a bit reluctant to operate at times, less responsive to key fob commands than toyota's sliding doors. the odyssey boasts honda's advanced compatibility engineering (ace) body structure. The vehicle's crush zones have been re-engineered to provide better protection for occupants while lessening damage when hitting other smaller vehicles and pedestrians. Its body structure is rigid, a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. A low drag coefficient helps improve fuel economy and high-speed stability. interiorinside, the honda odyssey is comfortable and convenient. It feels downright luxurious when ordered with leather trim. The materials are nice and the metallic-colored trim that runs across the center dash is attractive. the driver's seat is designed to hold the driver more firmly and is positioned in a car-like setting. The shift lever is mounted on the dashboard; it looks odd at first, but it's easier to use than a column-mounted shifter. A handy drink tray is provided between the front seats, but there's no center console. the second-row bucket seats are comfortable. the third-row seat is split 60/40 and folds easily into the well provided for it, and the headrests do not need to be removed before folding. there's room for eight people with the optional plusone seat that fits between the two captain's chairs in the second row. If it's not needed as a seat it can be turned into a table or stowed in the floor in place of the lazy susan bin. If the plusone seat is not being used, the right-hand seat can be slid across to allow easier access to the third-row seats. This flexibility makes the odyssey a versatile people hauler, but it's not the best in the class for hauling cargo. the optional voice-activated dvd navigation system includes zagat restaurant data. The large eight-inch monitor is positioned high on the dashboard for easy viewing. The voice-activated system responds to 637 commands and is smart enough to understand different accents and find locations without any need for input other than by voice. Apart from navigation, the system can be used to operate the radio and climate controls. We found the system responds effectively to voice commands. the available dvd entertainment system features a large nine-inch widescreen display that folds out of the ceiling. The wireless headsets turn on and off automatically as the ear pads are rotated. No, it's not for serving food, but for adding an incredibly useful hidden storage area. The previous odyssey had a storage well under the floor of the front seats for the spare tire. Honda engineers have moved the spare to a location in the rear. Instead of removing the round space under the floor where the spare used to reside they've turned it into a hidden storage compartment with a rotating compartmentalized bin. There's a small access panel in the floor between the two front seats for front passengers to get access and another bigger one in front of the center-row seats for access. So whatever stuff is stowed in the lazy susan, front or middle-row passengers can turn it for access. Honda's goal with this latest-generation model was to produce a minivan with the handling of a european sedan. the odyssey belies its size on the road and handles like a premium sedan. We found its handling and ride pleasant for long drives as well as around town. during a test drive along country roads near the honda factory in alabama, we found the odyssey offered a perfectly pleasant ride. It was neither too firm nor too soft. Granted, there is some road vibration. It was no worse than in a chrysler town & country, however, and many people will not notice as it's a common trait of many large cars and most suvs. All in all, it's an ideal vehicle for a long-distance drive. several laps around a race track showed the odyssey to be stable at high speeds. And we were surprised how much we could chuck it into corners. We found we could drive hard enough into a sharp corner to feel the tires slip without any drama. We could not feel much body roll (lean) in corners, and an odyssey lapping in front of us looked remarkably stable for a tall vehicle. parking is easy. The turning radius is among the tightest of any minivan, making it an easy to make u-turns and maneuver in parking lots. The park-assist system, with beeping tones that warn the driver of other bumpers front and rear, helps considerably when parallel parking. straight-line acceleration is good, better than other minivans. Yet despite having 244 horsepower going through the front wheels, the odyssey is almost devoid of any torque steer. the odyssey's 3. 5-liter v6 engine is smooth, powerful, clean and fuel efficient. Both versions of the v6 generate the same amount of power: 244 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque (though the ivtec generates its peak torque at 4500 rpm vs. 5000 rpm for the vtec). If it looks like horsepower figures are lower for 2006, it's due to a change in how the society of automotive engineers tests engines. No change has actually been made to the engines. the brakes work well. Every odyssey comes with anti-lock brakes (abs) and vehicle stability assist, honda's electronic stability control system. This system works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire accelerator and abs to modulate the brakes while managing the throttle and ignition. If the vehicle starts to lose grip on a tight turn on a slippery surface, the system automatically slows the engine and gently applies brakes to stop the vehicle from skidding out of control. In a test on a soaking skid pad we found the system works well. Fortunately it only works in emergency situations so it's not distracting during normal spirited driving. It can be turned off, though we recom.

The jetta is officially a compact car, but compares well to smaller mid-size sedans. It comes in sedan and wagon body styles with a choice of engines. for 2009, the jetta sportwagen is available, having joined the line of sedans in late summer 2008 as a 2009 model. The sportwagen adds flexibility without a larger footprint or any compromise efficiency. the 2009 jetta lineup also includes tdi versions of the sedan or wagon, featuring a clean-diesel engine and superior mileage. Electronic stability control and a cold weather package with heated front seats and steering wheel are standard on all 2009 models. Epa figures run from 21 mpg city on the gas engines to 41 mpg highway for the tdi. we found the jetta responsive around town and comfortable on long trips. It carves through curves precisely, but rides comfortably. inside, the jetta is roomy and nicely finished, benefitting from volkswagen's attention to detail. The driver enjoys excellent visibility and ease of operation, with logical controls and instruments. Finish quality is good, inside and out. The trunk is larger than in many sedans costing much more. The basic warranty has been shortened by a year but now includes all scheduled maintenance; the longer roadside assistance and powertrain warranty periods remain. the jetta was redesigned and re-engineered from the ground up midway through 2005. The seats are easy to adjust with manual controls, and the adjustable steering column and height-adjustable safety belt help drivers of all sizes get comfortable. The thick-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel frames a gauge cluster dominated by separate, large dials for the tachometer and speedometer, well shaded from ambient light by a curved cowl. In daylight the graphics read white on black, at night changing to white on soothing swimming-pool blue with lighted red pointers. In either case, the data are easy to comprehend at a glance. Within the tachometer and speedometer are warning lights and advisories about secondary functions, including one thoughtful warning that the fuel filler door was left opened after refueling. A large electronic message pad sits dead center, just over the water temperature and fuel gauges. In addition to more warning and diagnostic symbols, on upper-trim models this display includes trip computer readouts. trip computer data are accessed by one of three levers mounted on the steering column (or with the available multi-function steering wheel buttons). A trailblazing approach to the mid-size suv. introductionchevrolet trailblazer is smooth and powerful, with a stunning straight-six engine, a stiff chassis, a sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details. It's capable of off-road travel, but feels stable and comfortable on the highway. for 2003, the trailblazer adds an extended-wheelbase model with seating for seven, and an optional all-aluminum v8 for more towing power. The fuel tank is larger. And there's even a new north face edition with exclusive interior and exterior trim. the v8 delivers strong torque for towing, but the six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for the trailblazer. Long-wheelbase trailblazers are called trailblazer ext, and stretch 16 inches longer to provide a third row of seats for seven-passenger capacity. the base engine for all trailblazers is the vortec 4200, which was all-new for 2002. Its torque output is impressive as well, at 275 pounds-feet. for 2003, extended-wheelbase trailblazers are available with an optional 5. 3-liter, overhead-valve v8, developing 290 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Equipped with the v8, a two-wheel-drive trailblazer ext can tow 7,200 pounds (or 7,000 pounds with 4wd). standard equipment on all models includes dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, which inflate with less intensity in slower crashes. Ls is available only on the short wheelbase. lt 29,725) adds cruise control, fog lamps, a homelink transmitter, driver information center, luggage rack, heated power mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium-grade upholstery with eight-way power for the driver's seat, and an alarm. The front end looks like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. The bar across the grille is chrome on the ls and lt, body-colored on the ltz. The bumper under the grille has a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low. at the rear, there's a convenient and practical step in the center of the rear bumper, sort of a big functional notch. But the twin round taillights stacked over the backup light at each corner are kind of lumpy and googly eyed. overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the headlamps and turn signals (split by the grille crossbar) are stylish. Big fender flares visually express the vehicle's boldness, and may be either body color or silver. still, the most dramatic feature of the trailblazer may be what's under its hood: not a v6, but an all-aluminum, double-overhead-cam, 24-valve engine with variable valve timing and six cylinders lined up straight in a row. inline sixes were once the industry norm. An old reliable straight six served as the base-level power plant in chevrolet trucks (and passenger cars) from 1929 right into the mid-1980s. Jeep still runs a straight six in the cherokee. Bmw and lexus build some of the most sophisticated sixes in the world, and both companies prefer an inline configuration. An inline six is inherently smoother than most v6s, and simpler as well; whereas a v6 takes up less space, and a 90 degree v6 can be manufactured using v8 tooling, two reasons for the soaring popularity of v6 engines in the 1980s and 90s. Now, however, thanks to advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing, the straight six is poised for a comeback. the trailblazer's vortec 4200 is no ordinary straight six. And it has a very broad torque curve, peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 7 pounds-feet less than the ford v8, and 400 rpm sooner. The vortec also features electronic throttle control, an electrical system using silicon circuit boards (replacing some 1100 feet of copper wire), coil-on-plug ignition (thus no plug wires), and a seven-quart oil pan with a clever tunnel for the front drive axle, which allows the longish block to be mounted six inches lower, contributing to better balance and a lower center of gravity. because the engine is so quiet and smooth at idle, a feature called 'intellistart' was added which prevents the starter from grinding if the key is turned when the engine is already running. It was the first truck for the trailblazer's chief designer, ted robertson, who. interiorstandard-wheelbase trailblazers seat five passengers. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 39. 0, 45. 3, and 34. 8 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 5, 45. 9, and 32. 2.
