All-new midsize sedan seems rock-solid. introductionit's tough to imagine that a decade ago ford sold the best selling car in the u. Back in the 1990s, sales of the ford taurus eclipsed those of the toyota camry and honda accord.  then the market shifted to trucks and suvs and it seemed like ford abandoned the car market. Sales of the ford explorer skyrocketed. The taurus slumped and was relegated to the rental car fleets. People who wanted a mid-size sedan bought japanese cars.  ford is now determined to regain its footing in the car market. The ford fusion just may be the right answer and just in the nick of time. In any case, ford appears to have done its homework.  based on the highly praised mazda6 sedan, the fusion is a rock solid entry at a decent price. It handles well, looks purposeful and delivers good value for the money. lineupthe 2006 ford fusion was launched with front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel-drive version will be available later in calendar year 2006. Some people like the aggressive, angular look, some don't.  it starts with the large headlights that rise up into the top edge of the front fender, which features a crisp fold along the top edge that runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the trunk. Three thick chrome bars across the grille also make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  the fusion has a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look, not unlike some newer cadillacs.  overall, the fusion is slightly smaller than the taurus it replaces, but it has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares the same basic floorpan as the mazda 6 its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says it is a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good. interiorin keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent sized control buttons for the radio and climate controls should please everyone.  the center stack is simple, but nothing to write home about. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting.  a convenient storage bin on top of the dashboard features a large clamshell lid and it's big enough to hold a phone or small camera as well as maps and the like. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  rear-seat passengers will find a decent amount of leg room with nicely shaped front seatbacks that allow for plenty of foot space. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift over. The scissor-type hinges avoid the annoyance of luggage being crushed by gooseneck hinges. All fusion models include a 60/40 split rear seatback, which allows for a generous amount of pass-through space. driving impressionthe mazda6 and ford focus have established themselves as class-leading cars when it comes to handling. Ford openly admits that it's taken these traits from the two cars to make sure the fusion inherits the same attributes. The rack-and-pinion steering was precise with just the right amount of weight to make the driver feel connected to the road without being twitchy.  in the past, a car that handled well often came with a stiff ride. That's certainly not the case with the fusion. The front suspension is a short/long arm design while the rear wheels are anchored through a multi-link setup. Improved bushings and hydraulic engine mounts keep vibration and road noise to a minimum.  the 221-horsepower v6 engine provides enough power, although the fusion will not likely be mistaken for a sports sedan. According to ford's own tests the fusion can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds, a reasonable performance though not as quick as the v6 versions of the honda accord and toyota camry.  the six-speed automatic transmission is very smooth. Shift into drive and it works well. However, drivers who want more control won't find it here. Shifting from d to l only locks out fifth and sixth gears. Also, there's no indicator showing the driver what gear it's in at any given moment and around town it's difficult to tell by feel.  the fusion v6 manages 29 mpg on the highway, according to the epa. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. 2008 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, roomy and practical. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a midsize sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, as well as the honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S.  this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so.  several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level impala lt probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the lt with the optional 3. 9-liter v6, which features gm's active fuel management to improve real-world fuel economy. The ltz adds a heavy-duty suspension, leather interior and convenience features. The ss comes with a small-block 5. 3-liter v8 engine that sounds great and delivers strong acceleration performance.  chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. We highly recommend the stabilitrak electronic stability control. The audio system has been upgraded for 2008, and xm satellite radio is standard on all models. Onstar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers.  overall, the chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. The clever flip-and-fold rear seats are available 295); so is an engine block heater 75). A flex-fuel version of the v6 can burn e85 ethanol; it's standard in most states, optional in others.  lt 21,865) upgrades to dual-zone air conditioning, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, dual exhausts, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a compass, and more interior conveniences. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and traction control are standard on 2lt, ltz and ss, optional on ls and lt. Stabilitrak is offered for the first time on an impala and is standard on 2lt, ltz, and ss. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe 2008 chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  most recently re-styled for 2006, the current impala features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2008 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then.  the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners.  a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on lt and ltz. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average.  the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  for 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. A trailblazing approach to the mid-size suv. introductionchevrolet trailblazer is smooth and powerful, with a stunning straight-six engine, a stiff chassis, a sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details. It's capable of off-road travel, but feels stable and comfortable on the highway.  for 2003, the trailblazer adds an extended-wheelbase model with seating for seven, and an optional all-aluminum v8 for more towing power. The fuel tank is larger. And there's even a new north face edition with exclusive interior and exterior trim.  the v8 delivers strong torque for towing, but the six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for the trailblazer. Long-wheelbase trailblazers are called trailblazer ext, and stretch 16 inches longer to provide a third row of seats for seven-passenger capacity.  the base engine for all trailblazers is the vortec 4200, which was all-new for 2002. Its torque output is impressive as well, at 275 pounds-feet.  for 2003, extended-wheelbase trailblazers are available with an optional 5. 3-liter, overhead-valve v8, developing 290 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Equipped with the v8, a two-wheel-drive trailblazer ext can tow 7,200 pounds (or 7,000 pounds with 4wd).  standard equipment on all models includes dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, which inflate with less intensity in slower crashes. Ls is available only on the short wheelbase.  lt 29,725) adds cruise control, fog lamps, a homelink transmitter, driver information center, luggage rack, heated power mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium-grade upholstery with eight-way power for the driver's seat, and an alarm. Lt also comes with gm's onstar security system with gps tracking and cell phone communication, including emergency assistance and remote unlocking.  ltz 33,570) is the luxury-grade trailblazer, with leather upholstery, dual power seats (and memory for the driver), automatic climate control, overhead console, and audio controls in the rear seat and on the steering wheel. A sliding electric sunroof costs $550 on lt and ltz, but is available on ls only as a package with onstar for $800.  . walkaroundtrailblazer's styling is fresh, yet consistent with the direction of the design of chevy trucks. The front end looks like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. The bar across the grille is chrome on the ls and lt, body-colored on the ltz. The bumper under the grille has a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low.  at the rear, there's a convenient and practical step in the center of the rear bumper, sort of a big functional notch. But the twin round taillights stacked over the backup light at each corner are kind of lumpy and googly eyed.  overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the headlamps and turn signals (split by the grille crossbar) are stylish. Big fender flares visually express the vehicle's boldness, and may be either body color or silver.  still, the most dramatic feature of the trailblazer may be what's under its hood: not a v6, but an all-aluminum, double-overhead-cam, 24-valve engine with variable valve timing and six cylinders lined up straight in a row.  inline sixes were once the industry norm. An old reliable straight six served as the base-level power plant in chevrolet trucks (and passenger cars) from 1929 right into the mid-1980s. Jeep still runs a straight six in the cherokee. Bmw and lexus build some of the most sophisticated sixes in the world, and both companies prefer an inline configuration. An inline six is inherently smoother than most v6s, and simpler as well; whereas a v6 takes up less space, and a 90 degree v6 can be manufactured using v8 tooling, two reasons for the soaring popularity of v6 engines in the 1980s and 90s. Now, however, thanks to advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing, the straight six is poised for a comeback.  the trailblazer's vortec 4200 is no ordinary straight six. From 4. 2 liters, it produces a stunning 275 horsepower, 35 more than ford explorer's optional 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8. And it has a very broad torque curve, peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 7 pounds-feet less than the ford v8, and 400 rpm sooner. The vortec also features electronic throttle control, an electrical system using silicon circuit boards (replacing some 1100 feet of copper wire), coil-on-plug ignition (thus no plug wires), and a seven-quart oil pan with a clever tunnel for the front drive axle, which allows the longish block to be mounted six inches lower, contributing to better balance and a lower center of gravity.  because the engine is so quiet and smooth at idle, a feature called 'intellistart' was added which prevents the starter from grinding if the key is turned when the engine is already running. It was the first truck for the trailblazer's chief designer, ted robertson, who. interiorstandard-wheelbase trailblazers seat five passengers. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 39. 0, 45. 3, and 34. 8 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 5, 45. 9, and 32. 2. Trailblazer is 2. 6 inches wider than explorer, which accounts for the additional hip room. But clearly, the explorer's independent rear suspension, and resulting low floor, allowed ford to pack more leg and head room into a significantly shorter wheelbase.  on the other hand, the long-wheelbase trailblazer does offer significantly better second-row leg and hip room than the explorer, with 37. 5 and 58. 4 inches, respectively, versus the ford's 35. 9 and 54. 2 inches. The adjustment is manual in ls and gains in trickery all the way up to eight-way power operation with memory (including outside mirror adjustment) and optional heating on. We've been asking that question every year since. Finally, it's here.  the question now becomes: did they wait too long? Volkswagen's new beetle is no longer that new, having been around for about six years now. With the chrysler pt cruiser, ford thunderbird, mini cooper and other retrospective designs stealing headlines, the beetle no longer basks in the retro-fad limelight.  beetle remains a stylish car, however. And because it's a volkswagen, the beetle is a refined car. It combines german engineering and performance with exceptional fit and finish, and it represents a good value. Like other retro-mobiles, however, driver and passengers must make some concessions for style. Interior ergonomics are not as good those in a more traditional car, such as the golf. The new beetle convertible is good fun. Volkswagen has engineered a winning chassis with none of the cowl shake common on most convertibles. New for 2003, beetle convertibles are offered with a choice of trim and 2. 0-liter or 1. 8-liter turbo engines. Introduced for 2002, the beetle turbo s is fun, too, though its fun is best measured with a stopwatch.  the standard beetle is still cool, too. It comes in an assortment of bright, fun colors. Its exterior and interior design details are fun and creative. On the road, the beetle is smooth and sophisticated and handles well. It's considered a safe car. Beetle earned top scores in the federal governments crash tests and comes with volkswagen's excellent safety features. Volkswagen's standard automatic rollover supports serve to provide added overhead support in the unlikely event of a rollover. Sensors in the car indicate whether it is in a rollover situation, causing the automatic rollover supports to deploy behind the rear seats, whether the convertible top is up or down. The exclusive system works in conjunction with the headrests to help provide even more protection for occupants.  standard safety equipment includes driver and front passenger airbags, side-impact airbags mounted in the seatbacks, a safety-belt tensioning system, a collapsible steering column, an emergency trunk release handle and rear-seat tether anchorage points for securing a child safety seat. Antilock brakes (abs) come standard. Volkswagen's electronic stabilization program (esp) is optional on the new beetle gl, gls and glx, and standard on turbo s. Esp will automatically help stabilize the vehicle in the event of a sudden emergency maneuver.  . walkaroundthe distinctive dome shape of the volkswagen beetle is no longer a novelty. While there has been plenty of time for the aftermarket to produce beetle convertibles, the exorbitant price of these conversions kept the numbers down.  soft top or hard top, the volkswagen new beetle is built on the same basic platform as the volkswagen golf, a high-quality, highly rigid chassis. A rigid chassis results in a smooth, controlled ride with little noise, vibration or harshness. Well-engineered crumple zones and other features enhance crash protection. To maintain structural integrity without sacrificing its round shape, the new beetle convertible's body has been enhanced to provide additional support, including a rear seat support that enhances chassis rigidity.  beetle's dimensions prove it is no small car. The body is 161. 1 inches in length and 67. 9 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 98. 7 inches. It's longer, but narrower and taller than a mini. Beetle is shorter, but wider and not as tall as a pt cruiser.  quality is excellent. Gaps between doors, fenders and other body panels are some of the tightest we've seen. Fenders and bumpers are made from a special dent-resistant plastic. New turn indicators on outside mirrors warn drivers alongside when changing lanes. Color-keyed mirror housings and door handles add to the beetle's clean appearance. Smoothed-out wheel wells and revised bumpers give it a seamless, aerodynamic appearance. Double exhaust pipes hint of compressed aspiration under the hood, while special 17-inch alloy wheels and tires indicate a sports suspension. A subtle turbo s badge, styled after porsche badging, adorns the back hatch on which sits a rear valance. The turbo's rear spoiler pops up at speed and is designed to maintain rear-end stability in high-speed corners. After spending some time with the car, we found the rear spoiler a bit annoying as it comes back down with a 'thunk' when slowing down.  color is important on the beetle and a diverse palette is available, including special-edition colors introduced at different times during the 2003 model year: campanella white, galactic blue, sunflower yellow, sundown orange, cyber green, chromaflair silver/green, blue lagoon, red uni, chromaflair cyan/purple, black, reflex silver, red, blue lagoon, and platinum gray.  . interiorvolkswagen beetle sweeping roofline creates tremendous front-seat headroom, though less than the pt cruiser and slightly less than the mini cooper. Beefy front a-pillars (the post between the windshield and side window) impede vision in tight corners. (this big dash area and thick a-pillars are no doubt part of the beetle's excellent crumple-zone design.) small sun visors have no hope of blocking the sun coming in through the giant side windows. Convertibles offer as much room as hardtop beetles.  volkswagen's seats are comfortable and attractive. The flat design of the seat bottom makes it easy to get in and out of the seats, but they lack sufficient side bolstering for driving quickly on winding country roads.
