A benchmark for crossover utilities. introductionnissan hit a home run when it launched the murano. The nissan murano integrates function and high fashion. It combines sport-utility cargo capacity sporty driving dynamics. It is the quintessential crossover vehicle, an suv based on a car. the murano shares aspects of suvs and cars. Named after a region of italy known for its famous glassware, murano emphasizes refinement and on-road confidence. Getting in and out is easy and the back seats are roomy enough for a couple of basketball players. yet, as with an suv, the driver sits relatively high. Flop the back seats down and there's more than 80 cubic feet of cargo space available, which is a lot. It's much bigger than it looks, bigger than a midsize sedan, nearly as big as a ford explorer. It eschews the square look of a truck in favor of a modern aerodynamic design. The murano features a sleek front end with smooth lines front to back, and a greenhouse that slopes rearward, ending in a graceful c-pillar. Inside, the instruments and controls seem to float in pods that appear barely attached to the dashboard. the 3. 5-liter v6 engine, the same basic powerplant used in the 350z sports car, delivers hearty performance, tuned here to produce 240 horsepower. In short, the murano scoots. It comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission, or cvt, that's smooth and responsive while offering good gas mileage for the class. Murano shares basic underpinnings with the front-wheel-drive nissan altima and maxima sedans (but not, despite popular misconception, the nissan 350z-based infiniti fx). As a result, its road-tuned suspension delivers smooth and sporty handling. Sl and se models are distinguished by brushed aluminum trim on the rear bumper and chrome accents along the sides. the se comes with a firmer, sport-tuned suspension; a manual shift mode for its transmission; high-intensity xenon headlights; uniquely styled alloy wheels; and dark-silver lower bumpers. options for sl and se include a premium package 1,650), which adds a more powerful bose stereo with subwoofer, auto volume control and satellite radio pre-wiring to the contents of the convenience package. The sunroof package 2,650) adds an electric sunroof to the premium package. A dvd navigation system 1800) is also available. The rear-seat dvd entertainment package 1,720) comes with a seven-inch drop-down screen, remote control and two wireless headsets. A chrome wheel package is available for sl and se 1,200). safety features that come standard on all models include dual-stage frontal air bags with seat belt sensors, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-cabin curtain style head-protection airbags, and active front head restraints. Rollover sensors for the airbag system activate the airbags in the event of a pending rollover. A dynamic control package 750), which combines vehicle dynamic control (an electronic stability control system) with traction control, is available on sl and se. walkaroundthe murano is named after the glass sculpted in the islands near venice. The glass is known for its beauty as well as for the high-tech methods used in its production. In the nissan murano, this duality is most obvious in the styling. the murano is designed to blend the look of a car and a truck. The top half of the body is sleek like a car, while the bottom half is bulky like a truck. Overall, the look is much sleeker than tall box-shaped suvs. At first it looks a bit over the top, but most people quickly get used to it and traditional suvs start looking boxy and dated by comparison. big 18-inch wheels contribute to murano's muscular styling. Sculpted, vertical-stack projector headlights define the front corners. The windshield and front side windows are tinted green to deflect uv radiation; the rear side windows and backlight are darkly tinted for privacy. the highly styled rear hatchback is made of reinforced plastic because steel won't bend easily in such a complex shape. Details in the design help it slip quietly through the air. The colors were chosen carefully to promote a luxury look. interiorclimbing into the nissan murano couldn't be easier. The seating position and steering wheel orientation make it feel more like a car than an suv. The view rearward, however, is not compromised as much as we had expected by the stylishly thick d-pillars. the front seats are comfortable and supportive, even for people well over six feet tall. Petite drivers are also able to get comfortable, with optional power-adjustable pedals that help ensure a good driving position without getting too close to the steering wheel where the air bag is housed. The overall interior fit and finish are good. Wood-tone trim is available in the sl, but the aluminum trim seems more appropriate here. The gauges have a classy grayish background with amber backlighting. Steering wheel audio controls are illuminated. a prominent pod juts from the center of the dash presenting audio and climate controls. 2010 nissan rogue review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Value among compact suvs. introductionthe nissan rogue is a compact suv. Based on a car platform, it's considered a crossover vehicle, like the honda cr-v. No v6 is available, nor is there a third row for seven-passenger seating. the rogue is meant as a daily commuter, not an off-road adventure vehicle. Its all-wheel-drive system is intended for snow and rain, not rocks and mud. A so-called crossover, it's based on an economy-car platform. The towing capacity is only 1,500 pounds. We think it's one of the better handling small suvs, but it's not sporty. The ride allows for a lot of road feel and can become harsh on rough and irregular surfaces. Road imperfections and engine sounds intrude into the cabin. the cabin is pleasant, with materials that would look good in higher-priced vehicles. The controls are easy to use and understand, but the rogue lacks creature comforts and gadgets filtering down to other low-priced vehicles. There is no navigation system, for instance. an suv should provide cargo utility, and the rogue is up to the task. The rear seats fold flat and, on the rogue sl, so does the front passenger seat to permit longer items to be loaded. For 2010, rogue s models are now available with what nissan calls the 360 degree value package, which includes 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, privacy glass, a rear spoiler, a chrome grille, and a rearview monitor integrated into an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Nissan claims the package price saves about $1,000 compared to buying these options separately. with prices starting around $20,000, the rogue is a worthy competitor vs. Its carlike road manners, cargo utility and prudent fuel economy make it appealing. lineupthe nissan rogue is offered in two trim levels, s and sl. Rogue s is also available with all-wheel drive 21,540). the new 360 degree value package 1,040) adds 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, privacy glass, chrome grille, rear spoiler, and a rearview monitor integrated into an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Splash guards 125) are the only other factory option for the s model. rogue sl with front-drive 21,930) or all-wheel drive 23,130) adds a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, fold-flat front passenger seat, trip computer, an additional 12-volt power outlet, vanity mirrors, privacy glass, roof rails and a few other amenities. Tires upgrade to 225/60r17 on aluminum wheels. buying the sl also expands the option list. On all-wheel-drive sl's the premium package 2,230) also adds xenon headlights with manual leveling. A power glass sunroof is available 950) on either sl model. Dealer-installed accessories include floor mats 185), a towing package 450), and roof-rail crossbars 100). safety features include dual front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors, front seat active head restraints, latch-style child seat anchors, tire-pressure monitor, abs with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), and vehicle dynamics control electronic stability control with traction control. walkaroundthe nissan rogue appears to be aimed squarely at the honda cr-v. The styling is swoopy, with rounded lines and a wedge shape from front to rear. Flared rear shoulders and an upswept window line give the rogue a sporty feel. ornamentation is minimal. A black and chrome nissan badge up front is flanked by a body-color grille. Only that badge and the headlights lend any contrast to the front end. There is even less character to the sides, even with the chrome door handles which have been added for 2010. Side mirrors are black on the rogue s and body color on the rogue sl; and the standard wheels on the s are stamped steel with plastic covers (which look like five-spoke alloys, from a distance). The 17-inch aluminum wheels that come with the sl add a touch of drama, with five bifurcated spokes that seem to actively cling to the rim. In contrast, the 16-inch units that dress up s models with the 360 degree package are a more restrained and traditional five-spoke design. We're ambivalent about the chrome grille that comes with the package, which brightens the front end but fails to enhance its character. we think the rogue looks best from the rear, where the dark rear glass, eye-shaped taillights, rounded panels and license plate recess give it some definition. Unfortunately, the rear liftgate lacks a separate opening glass. among compact suvs, the rogue has a sleeker, car-based crossover look, like the cr-v, as opposed to the upright mini-suvs like the ford escape or jeep liberty. the rogue is the longest vehicle in the class, though it doesn't look it. At 182. 9 inches overall, it is even longer than the seven-passenger toyota rav4 and the seemingly large jeep liberty. interiorat first glance, the interior of the nissan rogue seems nice if somewhat plain. Closer inspection reveals quality materials impressive for the price. The dash, for instance, is molded in a soft-touch material that seems as if it might be right at home in an infiniti. The door tops also have a nice soft-touch material. The remainder of the materials is price-appropriate plastic that fits together well. the instrument panel features only two gauges, the tachometer and speedometer. It has substantially-sized buttons, but the presets are grouped in a, b and c folders, instead of am and fm sets. It takes some getting used to but, with 18 total presets, most drivers will be able to program all of their favorite stations. An auxiliary input jack is provided for mp3 player connectivity. storage for small items up front is adequate. The center console has two integral cupholders and a small tray that will work for holding little odds and ends. The tilt steering wheel helps, and there is enough head and leg room for all but the tallest drivers. There is good visibility to the front and the side mirrors are large, but over-the shoulder visibility is compromised by a smallish rear window and rear side windows that are pinched at the rear. The ride height makes getting into and out of the rogue very easy. the second row is usefully roomy, with head and leg room that can accommodate adults, even with the front seats moved far back. Three adults in the rear will be cramped, but they should be able to deal with short trips. Toe space under the front seats is plentiful. cargo space is good but not at the top of the class. The second-row seats are split 60/40, and they fold flat in an easy one-step motion to open up to the maximum 57. 9 cubic feet of cargo space. the sl model includes a folding front passenger seat, which folds almost flat to allow loading of longer items. While it is among the better handling compact suvs, it's not sporty. It drives more like a car than an suv, but it has more body lean in turns than most cars. The electric-assist steering requires only a light effort, but it feels natural and direct with good road feel. In fact, the rogue transmits more road feel to the driver through the steering wheel than most compact suvs. the ride is generally comfortabl.
