2007 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Optional diesel engine expands lineup. introductionjeep promotes the grand cherokee as a full-size suv, but that's only partly true. In its physical dimensions and towing capacity, grand cherokee is a mid-size, like the ford explorer or chevrolet trailblazer. At the base level, it's priced like a mid-size. It isn't even jeep's biggest suv, as that honor now belongs to the commander. Yet it is instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield post. All switches and controls are clearly are labeled and easy to find and use. In back is nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. anyone familiar with grand cherokees of just a few years ago will find that the chassis is now far more sophisticated, giving the current model much better handling than that of pre-2005 models. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good for crowded parking lots. a wide range of modern engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The smaller, 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 works quite well, too, and is offered in most states with e85 flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. Even the standard overhead-cam v6 is quite competent. For 2006, jeep expanded the grand cherokee model range with the luxurious overland and the high-performance srt8. For 2007, jeep has added a number of refinements. Most significantly, side-curtain air bags with roll detection are now standard on all models, and all models now offer the parkview reversing camera and active turn signals. Standard tires are wider. Remote start is standard on limited and overland, and optional on laredo and srt8. Cloth upholstery is standard. Air conditioning comes standard, along with one-touch power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, an engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment, tire pressure monitor and 17-inch wheels. Platinum accents highlight the exterior, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. Overland 4wd 42,690) adds quadra-drive ii. the 3. 0-liter diesel engine is optional on laredo, limited, and overland, with 2wd or 4wd, but was not available for earlier production models. the srt8 40,105) comes with a 6. 1-liter hemi rated 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension and its own electronic all-wheel-drive system. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. Revised taillights distinguish the '07; otherwise grand cherokee's outside appearance hasn't changed significantly since '05. while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. Wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. jeep has reached deep into its heritage to revive the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken. the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more bluff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. In all grand cherokees, the two-tone, dark-over-light theme set by the instrument panel flows into the door trim. the handbrake lever has a spindly, low-quality feel to it, however. new for 2007: the finish on the upper panel has been improved. The laredo has been upgraded here for '07, with the same chrome gauge rings that used to be exclusive to the limited, plus chrome-accented hvac controls and a matching-color bezel (replacing black).

Drive anywhere with room for seven. introductionthe jeep commander can haul up to seven people and a lot of stuff just about anywhere it can fit. Several new features are available for 2007 as well. Among them: a rearview camera, a power liftgate, a remote starter, and active turn signals. In most states, the optional 4. 7-liter v8 can operate on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. The rear seats are progressively stepped up, theater style, giving back-seat riders a view of the road. This feeling of airiness is enhanced by a pair of glass roof panels, though the third row is best reserved for 10-year-olds. utility comes in the form of a perfectly flat cargo floor when the rear two rows are folded down, providing nearly 69 cubic feet of cargo space. Those in the front seats enjoy a comfortable cabin, much of which is shared with the jeep grand cherokee. belied by the utilitarian styling, however, is the commander's responsiveness and agility. It handles surprisingly well for a tall, seven-passenger suv. On the highway, the commander is a notably smooth and comfortable cruiser, and we think it'd be a good choice for that cross country trip to yellowstone. It's reasonably quiet, allowing easy conversation, a pleasant surprise given the squared-off styling and all-terrain tires. a choice of v6 and v8 engines is available. The mid-level 4. 7-liter v8 seems an excellent choice, with responsive acceleration performance for working through traffic and fuel economy just slightly lower than the 3. 7-liter v6. Outside, overland is distinguished by platinum-look trim and a unique wire-lattice grille. overland 4wd 43,975) comes with quadra-drive ii. other commander options include rear-seat dvd player and engine block heater. An off-road group for 4wd models adds skid plates and tow hooks. A class iii towing package is available with the v6, and a class iv package with either v8. Additionally, many limited and even overland convenience features are offered as either options or part of option packages on lower-cost models. safety features that come standard include side-curtain air bags with a roll detection system deploy in case. walkaroundbased on the grand cherokee, the jeep commander is the second-largest civilian-production jeep in history. (the largest was the j-120/j-130 gladiator pickup of the 1960s and '70s.) the commander is two inches longer and more three inches taller than the grand cherokee. The commander's stepped roofline makes headroom for the rear-seat passengers, but the stepped effect is camouflaged by a roof rack rail. the commander is instantly recognizable as a jeep, thanks to liberal use of jeep design cues, such as the seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel wells, and squared-off lines with flat surfaces. Exposed allen-head bolts along the wheelwells and in the headlamp module are decorative, intended to create a technical look. its body sides are more vertical than those on most suvs, consistent with jeep design heritage. From the rear, the flat hatch helps define a boxier space that reminds us of the hummer h2. Jeep literature points instead to boxier ancestors within the jeep family, including the 1946-65 station wagon, the 1963-91 wagoneer, and the 1984-01 cherokee. the roof rack rail has three integrated tie-downs on each side. On limited and overland, assist handles extend from the roof rail down the back of the d-pillars, adding to the rugged, utilitarian appearance of the vehicle. The assist handles are black with chrome inserts on limited, and black with platinum inserts on the overland. On top of the rear bumper is a diamond-plate-texture step pad. The commander's raised roof permits use of stadium seating; each row is higher than the one in front of it, giving second- and third-row passengers enhanced forward visibility. the third-row seat will accommodate an adult, but seems designed for children in the eight- to 10-year-old range. To access the rear, the second-row seat flops forward, providing a careful adult with a reasonably easy path to the rearmost bench seat, which is split 50-50.
