Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the Edge competes with the Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander and CUVs, all of which are larger than their slippery styling suggests. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the Edge is easier to control than a truck-based SUV in the snow or on wet, slippery roads

2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All explorers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. Xls sport 2wd 28,260) and 4wd 30,490) add the tire-pressure monitoring system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, black step bars and wheel-lip moldings, an upgraded center console and floor mats.  xlt 2wd 29,650) and 4wd 31,875) get approach lamps in the side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver's seat, lumbar adjustment for both driver and passenger, an overhead console with outside-temperature indicator and compass, and warm steel accents for the center stack. Outside, a monochromatic treatment with chrome grille and fog lamps sets xlt apart. The limited 2wd 34,580) and 4wd 36,805) come with all the eddie bauer goodies, but a somewhat different look, thanks to chromed wheels and roof rails outside and higher-grade single-tone leather inside, with madarin teak accents.  all but xls can be ordered with third-row seating 745), auxiliary rear-compartment air conditioning 650), reverse-sensing system 255), power moonroof 850), and a dvd entertainment system 1,295). A trailer towing prep package 150) replaces the standard class ii hitch with a class iii/iv hitch and adds a 3. 73 (rather than 3. 55) limited-slip rear axle and seven-wire trailer harness.  second-row bucket seats with an extended floor console are available 795) on eddie bauer and limited. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires.  the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. Yet the explorer rides on a relatively handy 113. 7 inch wheelbase, vs. The awkward 129 inches of the extended trailblazer and envoy. It is a tribute to the clever design of ex.

2007 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover utility vehicle on the cutting edge. introductionthe 2007 ford edge is an all-new crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car.  the edge handles better than the truck-based explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Also, getting in and out of both the front and back seats is easier. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. It competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and other midsize crossover utility vehicles, all of which are larger than they appear.  we found the edge delivered on its promise to be a dual-purpose vehicle. It's roomy and comfortable, and it has fully foldable seats for cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a new v6 engine mated to a new six-speed transmission.  the edge has a modern look we find appealing and its bold chrome grille adds to its presence. We're certain most will view the edge as an edgy suv more than a car. That's no doubt intentional, designed to be appealing for drivers moving from a traditional suv who want a rugged look with room for the family and assorted stuff. Meanwhile, those who are moving across from a sedan will find they have not given up too much in the way of comfort and convenience and driving dynamics. lineupall ford edge models are powered by a brand-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine producing 265 horsepower. It is coupled to a new six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive (awd) is also available.  the ford edge se 25,320) includes cloth seats, power windows with driver one-touch down, remote keyless entry, am/fm/cd/mp3. The se is available with awd 26,970).  the sel 27,315) and sel awd 28,965) come with upgraded seat materials, an aluminum surround on the instrument panel, automatic headlights, an auto dimming rearview mirror, fog lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a body colored rear spoiler, mirrors and door handles.  the sel plus 29,070) adds a premium package with leather trimmed seats with memory, dual electronic climate control system, exterior puddle lamps, heated seats and exterior mirrors, a particulate air filter, and audio controls on the steering wheel. The seating flexibility package is also included which adds the remote release rear seat back and folding front passenger seat. The sel plus is also available with awd 30,720).  options for the sel include the vista roof 1,395), 18-inch wheels 395), reverse sensing system 245), navigation system 2,380), sirius satellite radio 195), and a cargo management system 65).  safety features that come standard on all models include seat-mounted side-impact air bags for the front seats and side curtain airbags with rollover protection for both rows of seating, the mandated front airbags, anti-lock brakes with advancetrac electronic stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. walkaroundwhen we first saw the ford edge we were surprised to discover it is much bigger than it appears in photographs. The reason is immediately apparent, it has a very wide track and a longish wheelbase. More important, this is not just about looks. A long wheelbase and wide track make for a more stable vehicle because the mass of the vehicle is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs.  the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  to top it all off, the optional vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorutility used to mean just the ability to carry stuff. Comfort and style were secondary, even mutually exclusive. The edge manages to provide plenty of utility and a stylish, comfortable interior. Starting at the back, the tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. And even when the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room.  pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to give a total of nearly 70 cubic feet of storage on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional sky vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier due to the rear wheels being placed well back allowing for less intrusion from the wheel well.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, again largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. There are two decent cupholders alongside the substantial looking transmission shifter. The edge is based off the same platform as the ford fusion and the mazda6, regarded as one of the best handling midsize sedans. So the edge starts life with a good base. Ford says it purposely designed the edge to deliver a slightly softer ride. Those who have driven both vehicles concur with this assessment.  ford's all-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine has variable valve timing and is much smoother and more refined than its previous v6s. The new engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission developed with general motors. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug.  we found the rack-and-pinion steering provided good feedback with precise control. The edge we drove had all-wheel drive and the optional 18-inch wheels helped make the car more sure-footed. We did not get a chance to drive a base model but suspect it will still be more than acceptable despite having slightly less grip.  the all-wheel-drive system is simple, with a viscous coupling in the middle of the driveshaft that constantly alters the power to the front or rear depending on the need at any given time.  the edge is not designed for off-road use yet it has a decent ground clearance of eight inches and ford even specifies its approach angle (16 inches), departure angle (24. 5 inches), and ramp break over angle (17 degrees), specifications usually reserved for off-road vehicles. We think it'll be fine for unpaved roads. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability control is standard on all models. It operates via the abs to control wheel slippage when the driver pushes the vehicle beyond the limit in slippery conditions or in emergency avoidance situation on a dry highway. summarythere's no denying that the ford e. 2004 ford explorer sport trac review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It has an outdoorsman's interior designed for easy cleaning and a bed made of a nearly impervious composite material. Yet it can carry a family of five in the comfort of a well-equipped ford explorer.  as its name implies, the explorer sport trac is based on the ford explorer, the best selling sport-utility in america. That would be a very good thing, except that the sport trac is based on the previous-generation explorer, not the 2003-04 model, so it does not have the current explorer's all-new chassis with independent rear suspension. The previous-generation explorer represented the state of suv design in 2001, but the new explorer, as well as competing mid-size suvs, have since passed it by in ride, handling, and overall refinement. Ford's latest safety canopy side-curtain air bag system with rollover sensors is now available as an option. Some of these packages are priced slightly higher with 4wd. The comfort group 1230) includes a six-way power driver's seat with power lumbar support, an upgraded floor console, an overhead console with displays for compass and outside temperature, automatic headlamps, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The premium sport group 700-730) includes 255/70r16 all-terrain tires on bright aluminum wheels, fog lamps, side-step bars, a 4. 10 axle ratio and, on 4wd models, front tow hooks.  the xlt premium preferred equipment package 2130-2190) combines the premium and comfort groups described above with a monochromatic exterior treatment. The adrenaline package 1810) combines a 510-watt pioneer stereo with chrome wheels, chrome step bars, and body-color bumpers and fascias. The pioneer stereo is also available as a stand-alone option 510), but only on the xlt. So is a power glass sunroof 800). Leather seating 795) is available only with the xlt premium preferred and/or adrenaline packages.  available on both xls and xlt are a cargo cage 195), and a hard tonneau cover 590), and a limited-slip rear differential 355) for the standard 3. 73 or heavy-towing 4. 10:1 axle. walkaroundford explorer sport trac has a rugged, utilitarian look with chunky cladding trimming the lower portions of its bulging body. Sport trac looks like a box, twice over. First comes the five-seat cabin, and then the bed trailing behind, like a separate unit. The bed walls are nearly 20 inches high. Ford engineers say they dragged cinder blocks over it and threw in steel pipes and heavy angle iron without causing any appreciable damage. Any marring or scratching blends in with the black grained finish, anyway. It can be a useful device, but won't hold back dirt or other loose material. When flipped inside the bed, the bed extender creates a compartment 25 by 45 inches that can keep grocery bags and other small items from sliding around. It's removable, but requires much fiddling to get it out and back in. A lightweight, lockable two-piece hard tonneau cover is also available 590).  the standard roof rack consists of just two longitudinal bars, with the crossbars sold as an accessory. When we loaded a nine-foot-long duffel bag full of sailing gear, we had to lay it directly on top of the paintwork. interiorsport trac's cabin is designed to be durable. Door panels are resilient plastic. Flooring is made of a textured composite rubber easily swept with a whisk broom or cleaned with water. Ford says it also reduces noise. Cloth is found only on the seats and headliner. The rest is ready for mud.  a power rear window slides up and down, which the kids in the back seat will love. Besides providing flow-through ventilation, it allows rear-seat passengers to reach through and grab things out of the bed, such as drinks from a cooler.  the front bucket seats were upgraded for 2003, and the instrument cluster has been revised for 2004. The center console provides big fixed cup holders in front, forward of the armrest, along with a little slot good for coins and tickets. Forward of that is another tray with two more slots, one of them fairly large.  sport trac's optional safety canopy air bags 560) are designed to provide head protection in rollovers. We strongly recommend getting them.  the comfort group 1,230) for the xlt adds six-way power for the driver's seat plus a deluxe floor console with auxiliary rear-seat climate and audio controls; an overhead console with map lights, a digital compass and an outside temperature gauge; automatic headlights; and an electrochromic rear-view mirror. The compass and outside temperature gauge are highly useful and appreciated tools that more carmakers should fit in their vehicles, especially any vehicle that may head into the backcountry. The leather seating option 795) for the xlt premium and xlt adrenaline includes electric heat, six-way power and adjustable lumbar support for both driver and passenger. The leather seats have a two-tone appearance with a dark side bolsters and light center inserts.  the rear seats are roomy in the sport trac. Rear legroom is ample at 37. 8 inches, a full seven inches more than in the nissan frontier crew cab pickup, and only a little more than an inch short of the chevy avalanche. At 38. 7 inches, rear-seat headroom in the sport trac is marginally better than in the avalanche. The sport trac's rear seat splits 60/40 and folds down without having to remove the headrests, quickly expanding cargo space inside the cabin. The back seat incorporates three child seat tether anchors. Unlike the avalanche, however, it is not possible to open up the sport trac's rear seat into the bed area.  a removable nylon pack under the center armrest enables sport trac drivers to carry their console contents with them. It even has a shoulder strap. But we found it more awkward to use in the vehicle than a fixed, rigid compartment would have been. We rarely used it, because we didn't want to deal with first raising the armrest, then lifting the limp material top secured by velcro.  one irritation is the parking brake, which requires a long reach to release. driving impressionexplorer sport trac is powered by ford's 210-horsepower 4. 0-liter v6. It's a sophisticated engine, with overhead cams, an aluminum head and aluminum pistons. It likes to rev, and it's smooth, responsive and great fun at speed.  sport trac comes with a five-speed automatic transmission that matches the engine for smoothness and sophistication. A low-range mode is ready for heavy snow, deep mud or soft sand.  sport trac is more than just an explorer with a pickup bed. To make the sport trac, ford lengthened the previous-generation explorer's frame more than 14 inches, for a 126-inch wheelbase. Thicker side rails, additional gussets and a tubular crossmember make the sport trac's frame 40 percent stiffer than the old explorer's, despite the extra length. Urethane body mounts, the first ever used on an suv, help smooth out the ride. But sport trac still doesn't ride as smoothly as the latest-generation explorer, which boasts an independent rear suspension and many other improvements.  sport trac is quite tall, so it doesn't handle like a car. The bushings, spring rates, shock valving and stabilizer bars have been modified, according to ford, to improve ride, handling, and isolation relative to the old explorer. Still, the sport trac pitches, weaves, sways and jo. Bucket Seats✔ Power Mirrors✔ Tachometer✔ Cruise Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ Chrome Wheels✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Aluminum Wheels
